The two women were recognised for showing exemplary leadership and skills in their respective PR roles, having undertaken groundbreaking concepts in their various organisations in the year 2014.

Over the last few years, women have dominated the PR industry as they continue to show excellence in their respective organisations. Last year, Madam Esther Cobbah, CEO of Strategic Communications (Stratcomm) Africa was adjudged PR Personality of the year at the IPR Awards, while her company received PR Consultancy recognition this year.

Madam Joyce Aryee is recognised for having served the Nation of Ghana for over 40 years in both the public and private sectors. She currently runs the Joyce Aryee CONSULT, which focuses in the areas of Management and Communications. She also serves as a Board Member on several boards including the Kinross Chirano Gold Mine Ghana board, the Mentoring Women Ghana board, and the Roman Ridge School Academic board.

The PR Discovery of the Year award, won by Gifty Bingley, is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the corporate communications function of an organisation and the country as a whole. It honors individuals who championed or pioneered the establishment of a communications function within the year in review and added significant value to the organizations they work with.

In July 2014, Gifty founded Tigo’s Corporate Communications and Responsibility function and over the course of a year, made significant impact by telling Tigo’s story across multiple channels and to various stakeholders, helping reinforce the company’s position as a Digital Lifestyle brand. With her deep understanding and expertise in Development Management, Gifty developed ground-breaking CSR initiatives that have impacted Tigo’s brand in a positive way – customers perceive it as a solutions provider to their dire communications needs, and the work culture makes it attractive to top talent.

Gifty’s top initiatives include, Shelter 4 Education – which involved the construction of four brand new schools and the renovation of two  others in rural Ghana; and Ghana’s first Mobile Digital Library – a mobile van retrofitted with laptops and kindles which brings the reading experience to children in some of the poorest parts of the country.  These concepts led to the company winning the ‘Best CSR Company of the Year’ at the 2015 Ghana Telecom Awards and CSR Telecom Company of the Year at the Ghana CSR Excellence Awards 2015.

The awards event which is in its 4th year was themed: “Public Relations and Peaceful Elections: Your Role, My Role”and chaired by Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, Minister of Education

Speaking at the event, Mr. Alhassan Andani, Managing Director of Stanbic Bank, said “Public Relations is about relationships, the building, nurturing and sustaining of healthy mutually beneficial relationships and engagements.”

He urged Public Relations practitioners to adhere to their role by shaping the political dialogue using their reach and network to encourage the adoption of their principles to serve the public in an efficient and effective manner.

Ms Elaine Sam, President of the Institute, emphasized on the mission of the institute to train members to effectively take on the needs of corporate institutions, government and high profile individuals.
