Jane Gitau, Chairperson PRSK

Public Relations professionals affiliated to the Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) will converge in Mombasa for their annual Summit that starts this Wednesday.

The Summit at the Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort will feature PRSK members drawn from the public and private sectors and aims to provide informative and interactive sessions on the PR landscape in Kenya.

The Summit will culminate in the Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) Awards for Excellence ceremony at the same venue on Friday evening. The Awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of public relations and communications practitioners in the development, public and private sectors.

PRSK Chairperson Jane Gitau said the theme for the three-day Summit is Communicating for Behaviour Change which she said has been considered as part of the society’s commitment to address contemporary challenges in public communication.

“This year’s summit will examine case studies, research and developments both locally and internationally on the area of behaviour change communications,” said Ms Gitau.

The PRSK Summit, she added, is a key platform for the society which allows members to accrue critical Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points as part of the minimum mandatory requirement for renewal of membership.

She said the Summit will seek to review advances in behavioral change communication by exploring and interrogating how the PR professionals can craft impactful strategies that demonstrate and deliver positive and measurable behaviour change campaigns.

“Our current political environment, social challenges such as the recent cholera outbreak and even economic circumstances point to the need for sustained behavioural change communication to help our members navigate the terrain and continue to play a meaningful role,” Gitau said.

Speakers at the PRSK Summit will include Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Deputy Commissioner Marketing and Communication, Grace Wandera, Kenya School of Government CEO Dr. Ludeki Chweya, National Assembly of Kenya Chief Public Affairs and Communications Officer, Japhet Muthomi, USIU don Dr. Scott Bellows, PSI Kenya Chief Executive Officer Anthony Okoth among others.

PRSK, with more than 500 active members, was established in 1971 and serves as the professional body guiding the PR practice in Kenya. The Society broadly seeks to advance excellence in Public Relations and Communication Management and to ensure that the practice continues to thrive within the ethical framework defined by the profession.

PRSK is a member of the regional East African Public Relations Association (EAPRA). PRSK is also a member of the Africa Public Relations Association (APRA), the continental body for all PR national associations in Africa. At the global level, PRSK is a founder member of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communications Management (GA) among other global bodies such as the International Public Relations Association (IPRA).
